Big Changes in November or We Move Towards Fascism

With the wins in Iowa by Huckabee and Obama, Iowans sent a firm message that they are concerned about the direction of this country. That Romney, Giuliani, and even Hilary represented too much of the "old boy" school of politics that has damaged this country so much in the last seven years. I think that many who are uncomfortable with continuing more of the same still do not, or cannot, see that we have been moving towards fascism - steadily, and not so slowly. The exact definition of fascism has been debated for years, but let's look at a few:

  1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism. (Webster's)
  2. Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers individual and social interests subordinate to the interests of the state or party. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, racial, or religious attributes. The key attribute is intolerance of others: other religions, languages, political views, economic systems, cultural practices, etc. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, statism, militarism, totalitarianism, anti-communism, corporatism, populism, collectivism , and opposition to political and economic liberalism. (Wikipedia)

We saw what happened when fascist governments gained tremendous power in the middle of the 20th Century. We need to be equally afraid when we see our own government curtailing the Constitutional rights of its' citizens, critics of the government are called "unpatriotic" and fired(or kicked off the air), when the government can spy on us, get our medical records, and even our library reading list at will and without a court order or our knowledge. When we see accelerated discourse about the "illegal immigrants" and fear of an increasing population of foreign-born in our country, when we want to build high walls to keep people out, and when we want to push our religion, politics, and multinational corporations on the rest of the world at the point of a gun, we should have no doubt that we are becoming a fascist nation.

In the mid-20th Century we saw the symbiosis of corporations and fascist governments. As corporate political power has expanded to such an extreme, a fascist government and powerful multinational corporations can now build themselves into a feeding frenzy of power.

And - most worrisome - when we deny the development of fascism as a possibility because "we are the best society, the best nation" - "under God" - and shouting "USA-USA-USA" - that should make us stop and shudder deep within our souls.

Sinclair Lewis said: "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross".

But even though most Americans do not see us moving towards a fascist state, the underpinnings of fascism are making them very uncomfortable. Americans want to move back to a government that doesn't torture, make war, and spy on its citizens. Americans want to move back to a government that cares for its people, that is tolerant, that is helpful. A government that takes all opinion into account and that can be criticized without lashing out. That is the promise - or at least the expectation - from Obama, and that is why voters are turning away from Romney and Giuliani who promise more of the same - "increased military and reduced taxes" (read reduced public services) and who cannot even view issues such as immigration with compassion. This November marks either the turning of the fascist tide, or the beginning of a very terrible time for the world. We can - and we must - make a difference.

Bravo, Dr. Blythe. I'm constantly enraged by the votes of my current Representative, Dave Weldon.

Getting you elected is my new part-time job.

Facism? This far left rhetoric is the reason our party has lost it's appeal to mainstream Americans. Your platform will not win here.

This is the perfect time, Dr. Blythe, to be running for Congress. Mainstream America has shown, in 2006 and in recent primary election turnouts, which party now represents them.

District 15 is a tough one- there are many here who believe that progressive ideas are out of place. But there are others who are energized by your campaign.

Your platform belongs with us in Brevard, and in Washinton!

Just listen to their own words.

The essence of fascism, therefore, is that government should be the master, not
the servant, of the people.: ``The Fascist conception of life,'' Mussolini wrote,
``stress- es the importance of the State and accepts the individual only in so far as
his interests coincide with the State. It is opposed to classical liberalism [which]
denied the State in the name of the individual; Fascism reasserts the rights of the
State as expressing the real essence of the individual.''6

Benito Mussolini, Fascism:

Doctrine and Institutions, 1935; "War alone brings up to the highest tension all human energy and puts the stamp of *nobility* upon the peoples who have the courage to meet it." "Fascism....believes neither in the possibility nor the utility of perpetual peace" "Thus a doctrine which is founded upon this harmful postulate of peace is hostile to Fascism. "

George Bush 2008

"The battle in Iraq is *noble*, it is necessary, and it is just. And with your courage the battle in Iraq will end in victory," he told an audience of Pentagon brass, soldiers and diplomats.

"I must say, I'm a little envious," Bush said. "If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed."

"It must be exciting for you ... in some ways *romantic*, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You're really making history, and thanks," Bush said.

John McCain

At a town meeting in New Hampshire, McCain was told that President Bush had indicated the possibility of U.S. forces staying in Iraq for 50 years.

"Make it a hundred," McCain responded. " perpetual peace" not a concept for John McCain nor Mussolini

Goebbels

The feminization of men always leads to the masculinization of women. An age in which all great idea of virtue, of steadfastness, of hardness, and determination have been forgotten should not be surprised that the man gradually loses his leading role in life and politics and government to the woman.

They are beginning to see that they are not happier as a result of being given more rights but fewer duties. They now realize that the right to be elected to public office at the expense of the right to life, motherhood, and her daily bread is not a good trade.

Rush Limbaugh
It's the feminization of the culture.

LIMBAUGH: I think a lot of the American culture is being feminized. I think the reaction to the stupid torture is an example of the feminization of this country." ["Limbaugh: prisoner abuse 'brilliant' ", Media Matters, May 7, 2004]

Dick Cheney in interview with Martha Raddatz

The American people you represent have said enough war, your response, “So”, Raddatz “So, you don’t care what the American people think?” Cheney Replies, “ No,....”

From Mussolini, “This anti-pacifist spirit is carried by Fascism even into the life of the individual; the proud motto of the Squadrista, "Me ne frego" ["I don't give a damn!"], written on the bandage of the wounded, is an act of philosophy not only stoic, the summary of a doctrine not only political—it is the education to combat, the acceptation of the risks which combat implies, and a new way of life for Italy”

Are we at the point where our vote is for a democratic republic or a government structured by Fascism?

I would not say that the country is moving towards a fascism but there are many things going on today that I am not happy about. However, as a doctor, you know that we must treat the root cause of the issue and not just the symptoms. If there were no war, we wouldn't have to resort to torturing militants to save the lives of our own troops. If we had a foreign policy that didn't meddle in the affairs of every other country in the world (by pushing democracy on cultures that could never live under those ideals), then we wouldn't need war to defend ourselves since no one would desire to attack us. If our government was dedicated to solving our own problems we wouldn't have a bad foreign policy because all our resources would be going to fixing ourselves first so we will be in a better position to helps others in the near future.

I could go on but I am sure you see my point. The root of the issue must be addressed or else we will continue to fight the never ending sea of symptoms.

But to be completely fair and honest we must also worry about the government shifting into a more communist stance. If the government becomes bloated and taxes raised through the roof then the scales will have tipped to the communist side of the block.

We MUST stress personal responsibility. It is each individuals responsibility to provide and take care of themselves. No one should be expected to pay for another persons laziness or bad decisions. We, as a society, have taken personal responsibility off the table which is seen every day with more and more stupid lawsuits, repeat offenders being let go AGAIN only to commit the same crime AGAIN, and abuse of social programs.

This country, like every great empire throughout history, is slowly starting to degrade and will eventually fall if something is not done to fix it. Lets just make sure that we tip the scales back to a perfect balance instead of swinging them too far to the other side.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."
